ISA Level one Surf and SUP Coaching
Prerequisites:
- 16 years of age
- A basic level of personal surfing and/or SUP competency
Course Aims:
To develop entry level coaches that can work with beginner level surfers providing a safe, fun, learning environment.
Subject areas include :
- Role of the Coach
- Coaching Methods for ELS
- Skill Acquisition for ELS
- Psychology of the Learning Experience
- Basic Surf/SUP Fitness
- Group Practical – Exp. A Learn to Surf/SUP Class

- Ocean Safety for ELS
- Risk Management & Duty of Care
- Equipment for the ELS
- Surf/SUP Etiquette
- Program Planning for ELS
- Writing a Lesson Plan
- Conducting the Lesson

Initial Course - 2 days ANNUAL Renewal – by renewing ISA membership
We place a great deal of stress on Competency Based Instruction ; i.e. actually performing the skills rather than simply reading about them and passing a written test.
Note: ELS [ Entry Level Surfing or SUP ].
Additional Requirements for Full Qualification / Accreditation
In addition to the successful completion of a course a candidate in the UK will not obtain full Accreditation until they have met the following criteria.
- Complete supervised 20 hours coaching post course
- Course fees paid in full
- Hold a current NARS SLSA or RLSS Beach Lifeguard Award or NARS Surf Coaches Beach Lifeguard Award ( other awards may be accepted on an individual basis please contact BSA office for advice)
- Hold a Current CRB Enhanced Disclosure
